Drumset and Percussion

My Teaching Philosophy

I often have to remind myself and my students why we make music: for the joy of it! I believe in structured practice, and know from experience that discipline and hard work are essential to becoming a better musician. At the same same, I encourage my students to be creative and to explore; we call the act of making music "playing" for a reason! I have experience teaching students of all ages and levels of interest, and this has taught me to cater my teaching approach to each individual student.

I can help you to learn whatever type of music you are interested in as well as helping you to discover new music to enjoy. I strive to be flexible to suit the needs of my students. Whether you just want to have fun and learn how to play some songs you love, or take on a serious, structured study learning to read music and develop professional performance skills, your goals will determine the structure of our lessons. I have a home studio with drumset, piano, electric bass, and percussion.

My Teaching Experience

I have been teaching private lessons for more than 15 years. As a teenager, I began teaching drum lessons at a local music store in Rhode Island and quickly discovered how rewarding teaching can be; my students have transformed my musical perspectives. The joy of sharing my knowledge about my greatest passion inspires my students not only to work hard, but also to truly enjoy making music. I have experience performing and teaching a wide spectrum of musical genres and instruments, including rock, jazz, reggae, Latin, and contemporary styles on the drumset, Classical/orchestral percussion, African, Latin, and Brazilian percussion, and rudimentary piano. For serious students, I believe in a well-rounded curriculum that exposes the student to a wide variety of musical styles to find the student’s greatest musical passion, and a good background in tonal music theory. I have completed both my B.M. and M.M. in Jazz Performance, and have a broad musical training that covers music theory, piano basics, and ensemble participation from big bands to choirs. During my undergraduate studies at the University of North Florida, I was  the first Teachers Assistant for the music program’s online music history courses. I have experience teaching individual lessons, group lessons, and classes at various music summer camps and after-school programs in under-funded grade schools. I have also contributed to multiple instructional music publications, including Danny Gottlieb’s Evolution of Jazz Drumming (#1 Top Selling Instructional Drum Book when it was released) and the University of North Florida Faculty Jazz Trio’s instructional course on Trufire.com, one of the leading online music education sites. I currently teach private drumset and percussion lessons from my home studio in Sparta, NJ.

I am the Program Director of Musical IQ, an educational company that teaches music and science to over 70,000 students in New York City each year.

"We Will Rock You!"

"I studied under Phil for about two years and learned a great deal from him. He was very intentional about exposing me to different styles of drumming, which expanded my knowledge and creativity. He really helped hone my practicing time, so that I make the most out of my time on the drums. His enthusiasm for drumming increased my motivation as a drummer, and left a lasting impact on how I approach drumming. I would highly recommend Phil."
